NEGA AR Glassfiber Products

1. ROVING

Nomenclature: ####H***$ #### = Roving Tex ( eg 2500)

H*** = NEG sizing code (eg H103)

$ = Number of filaments/strand ( eg X or Y)
(see chopped strand section below)

2500H103 — For spray-up applications. The high integrity strand has excellent combination of stiffness for good lay-down and wet-out but is sufficiently soft to allow easy roll-out into corners and other mold details.

Nominal Specification:
2500 tex; 28 strands; 200 filaments per strand
Filament diameter — 13 microns
(approx.) 42 LB package

2500H350Y — Specialty roving, particularly designed for spray-up of primarily flat products. It is not usually suitable for spray-up of products with shape and molded features due to its high number of strands.

Nominal Specification:
2500 tex; 56 strands; 100 filaments per strand
Filament diameter — 13 microns
(approx) 39 LB package

2500H530X — Designed for chopping into chopped strands that are suitable for premix applications. Especially suitable for direct chopping into mixer. The strands obtained from this roving are too stiff for spray-up applications.

Nominal Specification:
2500 tex; 28 strands; 200 filaments per strand
Filament diameter — 13 microns
(approx) 39 LB package

2. CHOPPED STRANDS

Nomenclature: xxH(or)S###$ xx = strand length in millimeters (eg. 13, 19, 25)
  H### = High integrity strand (eg. H530, H901)
  S### = water dispersible strand (eg. S750)

$ = Number of filaments per strand,
X=200 Y=100
Z=50

Example: 13H530X chopped strand is 13mm long, is high integrity, 530 sizing, and has 200 filaments/strand.

General Comments —

A. Strand Type:

H, or high integrity, denotes a strand that is designed to resist breaking down during mixing and processing so that it stays basically as a bundle of filaments. These products are particularly suitable for Premix and other mortar and concrete reinforcement applications.

S, or water dispersible, denotes a strand that is designed to break down into its individual filaments when it is added to water or aqueous mixes. These products are usually confined to low fiber content mixes (< 2% by weight), or high water content mixes where the excess water is removed, such as in vacuum de-watering processes commonly used to manufacture asbestos cement and calcium silicate products.

B. Strand Length:

Generally all types of chopped strand are available in 13, 19, and 25 mm lengths ( 1/2", 3/4" and 1"). Some strands are available in lengths of 6mm (1/4 inch) and longer than 25 mm (1").

C. Number of Filaments/Strand:

Basically this determines the number of strands per unit volume for a given weight percent. Generally the more strands/unit volume the higher the flexural strength but mix workability is usually reduced. Y and Z strands are usually preferable in low fiber content applications, X strands are preferable for higher fiber content mixes.

H530X — High integrity strand, designed for premix applications, such as premix casting and premix spraying.

Nominal Specification:
200 filaments/strand
Filament diameter — 13 microns
Packaging: 44LB bags

H350Y — High integrity strand, designed for lower glassfiber content applications, such as stucco and surface bonding. It has half the number of filaments/strand than H530X, so it provides twice number of strands for same weight content as H530X. This can create workabilty difficulties at higher fiber contents. However, this feature can maximize strengths in low fiber content composites. The finer strand is less visible at the surface, which is of benefit in stucco applications.

Nominal Specification:
100 filaments/strand
Filament diameter — 13 microns
Packaging: 44LB bags

H350Z — This high integrity strand has only 50 filaments/strand and is the finest strand available. It is especially suitable for asbestos replacement and applications where fiber visibility on the surface has to be a minimum, such as in stucco.

Nominal Specification:
50 filaments/strand
Filament diameter — 13 microns
Packaging: 44LB bags

PH901X — Heaviest strand available. It has the highest integrity and is most resistant to filamentization during mixing and processing.

Nominal Specification:
200 filaments/strand
Filament diameter — 19 microns ( the P denotes the larger filament diameter)
Packaging: 44LB bags

S750 — Designed for fast dispersion into individual filaments on mixing in aqueous slurries. Particularly suitable for asbestos replacement applications. Strand is wet cut and has residual moisture

Nominal Specification:
Filament diameter — 13 microns
Moisture content: 8%(nominal)
Packaging: 44LB bags

S453 — Similar to S750 but it is dried and has very low moisture content. Dispersibilty is not as fast as S750.

3. SCRIMS

Scrims are oriented continuous fiber fabrics. The continuous fiber is usually yarn or roving. The continuous strands are not inter-woven but are laid over each other at ninety degree orientation and then a binder is applied which holds the fabric structure in place.

Various types of scrim are possible depending on the spacing between the strands and the number of parallel strands as shown in Fig. (1) below.

Types of scrim commercially available are:

TS5X5
TD5X5
TD10X10

TS denotes a single strand in each direction
TD denotes a double strand in each direction
5X5 denotes 5mm (1/4 inch) spacing between strands
10X10 denotes 10mm (3/8 inch) spacing between strands.

Scrims are particularly used in conjunction with chopped strand reinforced mixes. When they are placed in the tensile regions of the product they can significantly increase the flexural strength of the composite. Request: TECH TOPICS — "Scrims and their use in GFRC" for further information.

4. YARNS

Two types of yarn are available which are suitable for the manufacture of woven and non-woven fabrics and scrims.

Yarns available are:

ACK37 1/0 0.7Z TF-126
ACG75 1/0 1Z TF-130

Other yarns may be available on special request.

Bulky yarns are also available that are suitable for braiding and other processes.
